John Maxwell delivers the approach to succeeding in your business and life through a simple formula: Make the right decisions early in life and Manage them on a daily basis. This declaration exposes the reader to the principle that must be applied to each of the decisions outlined in this book. He defines the key decisions in this book as “The daily dozen,” so called because he has identified 12 key areas that he feels if managed properly today, you can guarantee tomorrow’s success. These daily practices include your attitude, priorities, health, family, thinking, commitments, finances, faith, relationships, generosity, values and personal growth.
John quotes from one of my favorite leaders, John Wooden. Coach Wooden’s most famous saying, “Make Each Day Your Masterpiece,” is the central tenet of this book. The book teaches you that you must give 100% to your top priorities each day to ensure your success. The daily dozen are issues that each of us must confront at some point in our life. John’s teaching shows that you must give deep thought to each of these areas and if you make the right decisions, you can then spend your time ensuring that your choice is lived out in your daily life.
I highly recommend that everyone take the time to read this book. It will challenge you to question your life’s purpose and you will find a new sense of direction in your life, that is, if you do something about what you learn. You will be challenged to reconsider your priorities, to think in different ways, and to reestablish your own personal growth journey. Read the book, think on the decisions that must be made, choose your decision and then work hard to manage those decision- this is the tricky part for all of us. Even the book points this out, quoted from Dick Biggs: “The greatest gap in life is the gap between knowing and doing. “
