This is a business book that will not give you a visionary picture of success, no magic formula, no data-driven metrics, no inspirational stories……..fuggedaboutit! A great book for simple business principles (good for starting entrepreneurs) and keeps you interested through some of the stories of Michael’s former life.
It is a book of fundamentals. Michael Franzese outlines the simple strategies used by the mob to succeed in their “business.” Most of these strategies are simple and can be applied in any business. However, he also warns of the danger of philosophy and urges others to choose the right approach to conducting business. He states that the mob’s business plans are simple: make money by taking your money. Michael refers to the Machiavellian nature of the mob and its way of handling all transactions; the end justifies the means and win at all costs. He then discusses how that way of life leads to ultimate ruin.
The book starts with providing quick and simple tips on what it takes to succeed in business. It then provides a comparison of mob-style (Machiavellian) business practices versus legitimate business, using Solomon as the model for legitimate and wise business applications. Michael states that Solomon’s advice is really simple, yet most of us still fail to obtain the success that he achieved in his life. As stated, we tend to miss these simple items as we delve into the countless principles and advice given to us through today’s media.
In the mob, you win big but always loose in the end. Michael Franzese has lived this life before. He knows the anything-goes approach is ultimately doomed. Being one of the few to walk away from that business, he is now able to advise how a few of the simple business approaches learned from the mob can be applied using Solomon’s approach rather than Machiavelli’s.
The author states: There are no guarantees in business. What can be done, then?
Get your plan, work it smart, work it with people who can help you reach your goals, and work it Solomon’s way.
